Ditch the Razor for Our Laser Hair Removal

Updated: Jun 17

If you are tired of shaving, tweezing, or waxing unwanted hair, then laser hair removal may be an option worth considering. Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure that is now suitable for all skin types. During treatment, a concentrated beam of light is emitted which is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. This light is converted into heat which damages the hair follicle and its blood supply, inhibiting or delaying future hair growth. When correctly performed, laser hair removal should damage the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. As technology has advanced, this procedure can now be effectively performed on all skin and hair types, including individuals with extremely dark skin or very light hair.

Humans are the only mammals whose hair does not grow in a cyclical or seasonal nature. All roughly 5 million hair follicles are “free agents” growing and shedding independently. The Anagen Phase is the first phase of hair growth; in this phase, the cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly. About 85% of all hair is in this phase, and depending on the location on the body, this phase will be longer or shorter.  This explains why hair on the scalp grows longer than hair on the arm. Approximately 3% of all hair on the body is in the second phase of hair growth, the Catagen Phase. During this phase, growth of the hair stops. The Telogen Phase is the last phase of the hair growth cycle. During this resting period, the hair is ready to be shed and the cycle repeats. Each hair follicle, even when located on the same place on the body, can be at a different stage in the growth cycle. Laser hair removal consists of multiple treatments as the hair follicles targeted must be in the Anagen Phase of growth to achieve successful results. Effective laser hair removal can take anywhere from five to ten sessions to eradicate unwanted hair.

Some common myths surrounding laser hair removal include:

  • Laser hair removal will make my hair grow back thicker.

  • Laser hair removal destroys targeted hair follicles, there is no evidence that laser hair removal causes hair to grow back.

  • Laser hair removal only works on light skin.

  • Laser hair removal can be used on all skin types from very pale to very dark skin.

  • Laser hair removal is time consuming.

Advances in technology have made laser hair removal a quick and efficient procedure. Both underarms can take around 5-15 minutes whereas an entire back can be completed in 20-30 minutes.
